Gail Basner was born and raised in the Chicago area. Her parents were both artistic, as her father was an engraver and designer of casket hardware and her mother was an accomplished artist in oils. Gail attended classes at the Art Institute as a child to develop her natural talent in art. She majored in art throughout her formal education. She had little time to indulge her artistic skills all the years she was in the work world. After retirement in 1997 she discovered a passion for watercolors.
Gail has studied since 1997 with instructors in classes, workshops, etc. Artists such as Dan Capobianco, Lenox Wallace, Tom Lynch, David Becker, Terry Madden and many others. Most of her instructors were students of the late well-known watercolorist, Irving Shapiro. She is a member of several art leagues. She has shown her work in juried art fairs in the North Shore and Northwest suburbs of Chicago for years. She appeared as a featured artist on the cable television show, “Artist to Artist”. She has been commissioned by Highland Park to design a promotional mailing, and by the Peninsula Hotel in Chicago to create and design their Christmas card in 2015.
She furnished artwork for a chain of laundromats for a promotional calendar for their customers for ten years. Also two greeting card companies have been using several of her Chicago series paintings for Christmas cards, and her images have been used on souvenir items and Christmas ornaments for decades. People have been thrilled with lovely house portraits and pet images in all parts of the country. Gail paints to tell a story or capture a feeling or a moment in time, things that people can relate to. Her love of animals, people and surroundings show in her paintings of Chicago and European architecture, children, animals, and still life…she loves to paint it all in her favorite media, WATERCOLOR.
